DAILY READ: 2 John

Posted on 12 November 2007 by Matt

It never ceases to amaze me how many ways that the Bible can be interpreted. In my Study Bible, it says the key to 2 John is that not every polished speaker knows what they are talking about. And while I read that point in this book, I see more than that in this.

In 2 John, John is writing to “the chosen lady and her children”. What I read is John is encouraging this woman and her family to follow the teachings of Christ.

How happy I was to meet some of your children and find them living in the truth, just as we have been commanded by the Father. 2 John 1:4 (NLT)

But he is advising the woman to take the lead in this. I was talking to a friend this weekend and she used the analogy of the airplane oxygen masks. The flight attendants always tell you to inhale first before giving to your children, we must also take the lead in spiritual growth. If we don’t create the example and fill the home with His teachings, then it is difficult for anybody to be saved.

Watch out, so that you do not lose the prize for which we have been working so hard. Be diligent so that you will receive your full reward. 2 John 1:8 (NLT)

We do need to be aware of other people and things that may lead us away from His Word. Take the breath first, then pass it to the kids.

Well, I have much more to say to you, but I don’t want to say it in a letter. For I hope to visit you soon and to talk with you face to face. Then our joy will be complete. 2 John 1:12 (NLT)

In the world that we live in, it is great to have email, text messaging, My Space, Facebook, cell phones and hundreds of other forms of communication and they are great when there is no other alternative. But, sometimes we can’t be lured into using it as a substitute to real life communication, face to face. Sometimes we fool ourselves into thinking it is comparable, but we find true joy with live fellowship. Try it. You’ll like it.

And now that this post is the same length as 2 John, I move on to 3 John. Read on…
