In this second letter to the early church, we find Peter encouraging them to stay true to the Word of Christ, but also to be on the look out for false teachers and others that don’t believe in what they are believing. First, stay holy and true to his word:
His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV)
For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith, goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Peter 1:5-8 (NIV)
What I like about this verse is that Peter tells us that we don’t have to be all of these things at once, that we must work on each one until we get to the next. In other words, baby steps. I think that some people that use excuses not to find the Lord believe that there needs to be some huge transformation, but it is a marathon, not a sprint. I think that we believers forget about this as well. It takes time and when we are telling others about our faith, we flood them with things that have taken us time to build. We need to remember where we came from and where we have been in our faith when sharing.
And isn’t it amazing that even today, we too have to beware of false teachers:
Many will follow their evil teaching and shameful immorality. And because of them, Christ and his true way will be slandered. In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction is on the way. 2 Peter 2:2-3 (NLT)
Yet another example of how the Bible is relevant to us today. In this world of multimedia that we live in, false teachers are finding even more ways into our lives without even encountering us. Just like anything else in life, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Being a follower of Christ is not always easy and it is so convenient to fall into these traps. We need to look out for each other and make sure that we don’t fall for these attempts to lead us astray.
Good stuff. Read on…
